Tour Details: 4-day tour from Marrakech
4-day Morocco desert tour: Desert From Marrakech
These 4 days desert tour from Marrakech is, in fact, a proposal very similar to our 3-day tour. But with a fundamental difference: we add a fourth day to be able to make the tour more relaxed, including some additional places of interest. Therefore, this trip of 4 days and 3 nights is ideal for those who have more time and want to make the most of the Merzouga desert and the road to travel to get there. Of course, both proposals share one thing: the indescribable sensation of moving through the dunes of Erg Chebbi and sleeping in them.
Merzouga Desert: the true embrace of the Sahara
For many, the best embrace of the Sahara is the Merzouga desert. The Erg Chebbi dunes are the largest and most magnificent in North Africa, and they are located about 560 kilometers southeast of Marrakech in the Moroccan desert. Its beautiful golden sand elevations mirror the waves of this golden and endless sea’s calming storm. Walking footprints have a poetic beauty that is only rivaled by the warmth of sunset and sunrise light. The starry sky and the night’s moving silence exist on a parallel level.
Although the Merzouga Desert is, for many, the main attraction of this 4-day desert tour, we must not forget that the trip includes many other places of interest. And they are spread over the four-day program. For example, the numerous adobe fortresses that will be seen and/or visited during the tour cover some sections of the famous ‘Road of the thousand kasbahs’. For example, the N’kob, Taourirt, and, above all, Ben Ait Haddou, are recognized as World Heritage Sites by Unesco.
There are many sights to see in terms of scenery. We’ll traverse the Atlas Mountains near Marrakech, which are stunning and intimidating, with snow on the peaks for most of the year. The valleys through which the road traverses are no less fascinating; the Roses, Dades, and Draa provide unexpected bursts of color and greenery.
Todra Gorges: The beauty canyon gorges
The Todra Gorges, in particular, deserve special mention: since ancient times, this river has destroyed the stony environment through which it runs. This has resulted in prints that will leave the expedition speechless: 200-meter-high walls and gorges that defy natural rules. We’ll also visit cities with various attractions, such as Ouarzazate and Rissani, the latter of which has the country’s largest traditional medina.
All of these are sufficient reasons to ‘focus’ on a journey through the Merzouga desert’s sand sea, allowing yourself to become lost along the route with the assistance of the best professionals: those who our agency will provide you with from the start to the finish of your journey.
During this 4-day Marrakech Desert Tour to Merzouga, you’ll see the majestic Atlas Mountains, ride a camel into the Merzouga Sahara, and sleep in an authentic Sahara Berber Camp. If you have any specific questions or need further details about any of the days, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Dades Valley
The 4-day desert tour is a remarkable journey that commences in Marrakech, beginning from a location of your choosing. Whether you prefer to start from the airport upon your arrival or from another location within the Red City, such as your hotel, our experienced driver or guide will be ready and equipped with a comfortable vehicle for the entirety of your trip. The tour’s first day takes you over the stunning Tizi N’tichka pass, providing unmatched views of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains’ summits during the autumn and spring. Your initial significant stop of the day is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its role as a filming location in iconic movies and television series like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Game of Thrones.”
Continuing through Ouarzazate, often referred to as the Hollywood of Morocco, you’ll embark on the scenic route of the ‘thousand kasbahs.’ This name comes from the numerous adobe fortresses that are scattered throughout the region. The journey passes through the Valley of the Roses and then the Dades Valley, where the landscape becomes more colorful and lush, adding a touch of greenery to the final stretch of your first day. You’ll spend the evening in a charming riad in the Dades Valley for dinner and rest, marking the end of the initial day of this captivating 4-day desert tour.
Day 2: Dades Valley - Todra Gorges - Rissani - Merzouga
The second day of this 4-day desert tour Marrakech begins with a delightful breakfast at the riad, setting the stage for even more remarkable firsthand experiences. Before arriving in the Merzouga desert, you’ll embark on a journey to the Todra Gorges, where you’ll travel its winding roads safely in our vehicle. However, we’ll also take some time to explore the breathtaking rock walls and the small river that has carved this natural wonder. Equally deserving of admiration is the Merzouga desert, embraced by a vast sea of fine golden sand dunes. In the town of Merzouga, named after these mesmerizing dunes, we’ll have a reference hotel from which we’ll transition from four wheels to camels to reach the tented camp. It’s worth noting that this camel ride experience is optional and can be replaced with a 4×4 vehicle if preferred.
The sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes and stargazing under a brilliantly luminous and beautiful night sky are two of the most unforgettable experiences of this journey to the Merzouga desert. As the day draws to a close, you’ll enjoy dinner and a peaceful night’s rest in Berber tents at the camp, fully equipped with modern amenities for your comfort.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert - Rissani - N'kob - Ouarzazate
The start of the third day unveils the breathtaking sunrise over the Merzouga desert. You’ll witness a captivating light and sound display followed by a camel ride back to Merzouga. In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to freshen up, either at the camp or a hotel, depending on your chosen package, ensuring a more comfortable journey ahead. Continuing along the road, you’ll leave the Merzouga desert behind, venturing through different parts of the Sahara desert, where more incredible sights await. One such place is Rissani, boasting the largest traditional medina in the southern region of the country. After exploring Rissani, the journey continues to Alnif, Tazarine, and N’Kob, all small towns that retain the charm of the old Berber settlements in the desert.
Afterward, we’ll make a slight detour from our route, heading south into the Draa Valley. This route allows you to witness the grandeur of the largest palm grove in North Africa. Before reaching Zagora, we’ll retrace our steps to return to Ouarzazate. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert,” Ouarzazate will be the place where we spend the night in a comfortable hotel and enjoy a delicious dinner, serving as our departure point for the following day.
Day 4: Ouarzazate - High Atlas - Marrakech
The fourth and final day of our journey through Merzouga’s desert will bring us back to Marrakech. However, before concluding our adventure, we have the opportunity to visit one more remarkable monument: the splendid Taourirt Kasbah, one of the largest and best-preserved kasbahs in southern Morocco. Opting for this visit will allow us to admire its intricate adobe exterior ornamentation, as well as the plasterwork and colorful tiles that adorn its various internal corridors.
Following the Kasbah visit, we’ll hit the road again to cover the remaining 200 kilometers between us and Marrakech. Our route will take us across the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N’tichka pass, providing another opportunity to appreciate the lush landscapes and Berber villages we encountered on the first day. Our services will conclude at Marrakech Airport or any other prearranged location, bidding you farewell with gratitude, best wishes for the future, and the hope of reuniting for more adventures.
