The Zagora desert tour is one of our most popular among our visitors, thanks to two factors: the beauty of its sandy scenery and its proximity to Marrakech, the route’s start and finish cities. As a result, if you don’t have enough time to visit Merzouga but don’t want to leave Morocco without experiencing the true embrace of the Sahara on the backs of noble dromedaries, the route to Merzouga is the best option.
The Zagora desert is named after a part of the Sahara desert that exists in the area of this town in Morocco’s south. You can get in contact with the “true Sahara” here. Unlike popular belief, the majority of this desert is stony terrain; nevertheless, the scenery here is more sandy, which makes the camel ride more enjoyable, and is one of the highlights of this excursion from Marrakech to Zagora Desert.
Without a doubt, one of the most appealing aspects of the Zagora desert tour is the opportunity to sleep in such a unique environment. There are few sites in the world where you may experience such a moving silence, a starry sky, and a distinctive sun at sunrise and dusk. All of this is made possible by the fact that the trip’s lodging is a Berber tent inside a small camp situated in the middle of the desert. It is also very comfortable, despite its distant position.
Moreover, as usual in all our tours in Morocco, the journey to the desert of Zagora can be considered a real attraction of the excursion. Before your eyes, the landscape will change as we move away from Marrakech and approach the desert of Zagora. There is 350 km in which we will pass important landmarks such as the Tiz’n Tichka pass (2,200 meters above sea level) in the High Atlas or the largest palm grove in Africa in the Draa Valley (150 km). All dotted with fertile orchards, legendary adobe kasbahs, and charming Berber villages.
On the way back, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, will be visited. This beautiful fortress has served as the perfect backdrop for big film and television projects such as Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia, not just for our travelers’ images, but also for major film and television productions.
As if this kasbah wasn’t enough, we also visit a second castle during the Zagora desert excursion: Telouet, the former residence of the Lord of the Atlas. Despite the fact that some portions of the enclosure are not in pristine condition, you can still admire beautiful chambers with expensive ceramics, stucco, and woodwork coffered ceilings.
The 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora is a must-do experience for individuals who don’t have much time but yet want to go on a desert tour, sleep in tents, and ride a camel. This 2-day desert journey from Marrakech is also passing through the high Atlas Mountains, admiring the breathtaking views of the Draa valley and its palm groves, visiting UNESCO world heritage sites, riding camels, and sleeping in a tent or below the stars.
The 2 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Zagora is famous for its sunsets and stunning draa valley, as well as a camel trek and an overnight stay in a desert tent. When you arrive in Zagora, you’ll be greeted by your camels, who will accompany you into the desert. You’ll arrive at your Zagora desert camp after around an hour on camels, have dinner, play drums with camel guides, and spend the night in nomad traditional tents.
The 2-day tour plan from Marrakech to Zagora Desert will take you to see and do some of Morocco’s key attractions. In general, you’ll start by exploring the high Atlas Mountains, passing by some of the country’s most famous Kasbahs. However, you will get the opportunity to participate in one of Morocco’s most popular activities: a camel ride through the dunes. A night in a Berber camp in the center of the Zagora desert is also included in our journey.
This excursion to the desert of Zagora covers two full days and one night. The program, as you can see, is intense in order to make the most of this trip of 350 km for the outward journey, and as many for the return. But if you wish to introduce any variation to adapt it to your own preferences, just let us know.
The first day of this Zagora desert tour begins in Marrakech, where our Multilingual speaking driver/guide will pick you up from your hotel or another agreed-upon location and transport you to Ouarzazate, Morocco’s southernmost city. We’ll do it by crossing the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which is 2,200 meters above sea level. The meandering route will pass through small mountain settlements on both the ascent and descent, providing amazing panoramic vistas.
Overcoming this imposing natural barrier, we will enter fully into the territory that since time immemorial has been home to the Berber population. After leaving behind Ouarzazate, considered the ‘Gateway to the Desert’, we will travel through the Draa Valley, which is considered the largest palm grove in Africa: 150 km of extension to give pleasant notes of green color to our trip, which also stand out suggestive kasbahs and humble orchards worked by villagers.
Our adventure will come to an end in the afternoon in Zagora, the town that gives the desert its name. From here, we’ll make our way to our tented camp in the middle of the desert. And we’ll accomplish it in the most fitting mode of transportation: on the backs of magnificent camels, escorted by their leaders at all times. Once we arrive at the camp, we’ll watch the sunset, eat dinner, and sleep with the stars shining brightly in our eyes.
On the second day of this excursion to the desert of Zagora, its sandy landscape will give you a touching greeting of ‘good morning’ with the first rays of sunshine, making the breakfast included in the route even more special. We will leave the camp also on the back of camels and after that, we will start our way back through the Draa Valley and towards Ouarzazate, where we will stop to take pictures in the kasbah of Taourirt. A few kilometers after Ouarzazate, we will arrive at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will spend the necessary time visiting this cinematic fortress. And shortly after, we will do the same with the kasbah of Telouet (optional tickets in both monuments).
Back in the vehicle, we will complete the last 130 km that separate us from Marrakech, crossing the Atlas Mountains. Upon arrival in this city, its airport, or any other agreed place, our services will end with the wish to have provided you with the best of experiences.

Our two-day Zagora desert tour was fantastic and exceeded our expectations and photographs. Mustafa, our driver, was extremely kind and accommodating, and he spoke excellent English. He picked us up from our riad, which was convenient. We stopped every 1.5 hours for a bathroom, water, and snacks on the way. The camp was both cozy and attractive. The beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms were clean and functional. They prepared a delicious dinner and brunch for us. We had a gloomy night, but witnessing the dawn from the top of the sand dunes was breathtaking and such a memorable experience.

My wife and I had a two-day tour with this travel agency; the views were breathtaking, and the locals were friendly and accommodating. We loved the desert night the best, despite the fact that we didn't have much time, only two days, and the tour was nicely arranged. Thank you, Morocco Vacations!
