In this second part of this 8-day desert tour, we will travel more than 800 km in a spectacular that will take us to the north of Morocco, where places of great interest and beauty are concentrated: for example, the imperial city of Fes, the Roman ruins of Volubilis or the picturesque town of Chaouen. And on the way, we will see natural landscapes of unique beauty, such as the peaks of the Middle Atlas, the National Park of the Cedars, or the Mediterranean mountains of the Rif.

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

The program of the first day of this tour is conditioned by the arrival of your flight in Marrakech. Whatever the time, our English-speaking driver will pick you up at the airport with a comfortable and private vehicle for the transfer to your riad, which will be located in the medina. Before the night’s rest in this accommodation, you will have some free time to have a first contact with the city.

Summary of the first day

Day 2: Marrakech

Our official guide will take you to see the main sights of Marrakech after a delicious breakfast at the riad. The exteriors of the Koutoubia mosque, the Saadian tombs, the Bahia Palace, and the Ben Youssef medersa are examples of attractions that can be included in the guided trip. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the bustling daily rhythms of the medina, its neighborhoods, and its squares, particularly the Jemaa el Fna, which has been designated by Unesco as a Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This second day’s afternoon will be free for shopping or furthering your city exploration, such as visiting art and craft museums or exotic gardens like Majorelle. In the evening, you’ll be staying in the same gorgeous riad.

Summary of the second day

Day 3: Marrakech - High Atlas - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate

Having breakfast at the riad on the third day of the tour, we’ll set off on a road trip from Marrakech to the desert and northwestern Morocco. For the time being, we’ll travel to the far south, passing across the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters above sea level. From October until far into spring, quaint and attractive Berber settlements will appear on the ascent, surrounded by high mountain panoramas and snow-capped heights.

We’ll arrive at the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou after taking the necessary environmental shots and completing the descent down the south side of the High Atlas. It is a walled town built in adobe by desert Berbers some centuries ago that has become quite important in the area’s caravan routes. It is now not simply a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also an ideal location for the filming of movies and television shows such as Game of Thrones.

Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert” and “Moroccan Hollywood” because of its film studios, is located near this ksar. The Taourirt Kasbah, which we shall visit, is located in the city’s heart. After that, we’ll head to a nearby hotel for dinner and a well-earned night’s sleep.

Summary of the third day

Day 4: Ouarzazate - Valley of Roses - Dades Valley - Todra Gorges - Desert of Merzouga

The fourth day of this 8-day desert tour will begin with breakfast at the hotel in Ouarzazate, followed by a journey through the Road of Thousand Kasbahs. We’ll stop along the way at the Todra Gorges, a stunning rocky canyon through which the road snakes; we’ll get out of the car to picture its formidable walls, which rise up to 200 meters in some places. Further on, the path will take us on a fresh and exciting stroll, this time through Tinghir’s palm grove. It will not be the only one of the day, as we will also pass through Tinjdad and Touroug shortly after. We’ll arrive in Erfoud, a city known for its rich fossil and marble industry legacy, in a few kilometers. All of this will be revealed during a workshop visit.

In the last part of the day, we will reach the town of Merzouga. There we will change means of transport: we will temporarily leave the 4×4 and we will get on the 8×8, that is, the dromedaries that will take us to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, in the heart of the desert. At this moment we will contemplate a magical sunset over this sea of fine golden sand. The night will be no less special: in a tent camp in the middle of the desert, under a sky sparkling with stars, where dinner will also be served.

Summary of the fourth day

Day 5: Desert of Merzouga - Rissani - Ifrane - Fes

The spectacular sunrise of the fifth day will find us in the tented camp in the middle of the dunes of Erg Chebbi. After breakfast, we will take another camel ride to return to Merzouga and retrieve our vehicle. During the morning there will also be time for a refreshing shower (at the camp or in a hotel, depending on the package contracted).

Our car will proceed north from here till the finish of the tour. We’ll pass via Rissani, the Ziz Valley, and the Middle Atlas on our way. On the other side of this mountain range, we will find Ifrane and its National Park, commonly known as Cedar Park or the Monkey Park because it is one of the few areas where the Barbary monkey remains.

At the end of the day, we will arrive in Fes. The accommodation where you will spend the night will be a riad in the medina, an unbeatable place from which to discover the attractions of this imperial city the next day.

Summary of the fifth day

Day 6: Fes

The sixth day, which begins with breakfast at the riad, is entirely dedicated to visiting Fes. For this, you will have the services of an official local guide, who will help you discover the main cultural attractions of this imperial city, mainly concentrated in its historic medina. Some of these attractions are the medersa of Bou Anania, the Nejjarine fountain, the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss or the Karaouine mosque. In addition to its religious importance, this temple stands out for its cultural relevance, as it is one of the great references of knowledge in Islam, also housing the headquarters of the University of Fes.

The guided tour will extend beyond lunch, which will be free, and includes a visit to very characteristic neighborhoods, such as the tanners or the Jewish Mellah. Finally, after a day of intensive sightseeing, you will spend the night in the same riad in the medina.

Summary of the sixth day

Day 7: Fes - Volubilis - Chaouen

We’ll continue our journey by vehicle after breakfast at the riad in Fes to see more of northern Morocco’s amazing sights. The first is Volubilis, a magnificent Roman-era archaeological site that we can visit with a guide if we like. A stroll through the ruins of Jupiter Capitolinus’ temple, Caracalla’s arch, or the mosaics of the villas transports us to the first centuries of our period, when this land was part of the province of Mauritania Tingitana.

Back on the road, we will head for Chaouen (also called Chefchaouen) and arrive in this small town with enough time to admire its beauty: during the afternoon at leisure you can stroll through the narrow streets of its historic center, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Its winding layout is even more special thanks to the blue color of its houses. In the evening you will rest in a charming riad in the heart of Chaouen.

Summary of the seventh day

Day 8: Chaouen - Tangier

The eighth day of this tour, which takes you through Marrakech, the desert, and Morocco’s north, is the final day. Breakfast will be served in the riad of Chaouen, followed by a drive to Tangier’s port or airport. Depending on the time of your boat or flight, you will appreciate the opportunity to roam around this interesting city near Cape Espartel. Our driver will transport you to the boarding point, where our services will come to an end, with the hope that you enjoyed the tour and that we will meet again in the future for another tourist adventure in Morocco.

Reviews: 8-day desert tour from Marrakech

Our trip to Morocco would not have been complete without the tour. We stopped several times to take in the breathtaking scenery. Everything was great, from the hotel where we spent our first night to the restaurants where we ate lunch and the very comfortable desert camp. Hamid, the guide, speaks English and is very pleasant and active, and the car is really comfy. It is a must-do agenda for everyone visiting Morocco; seeing the sunset while riding a camel is incredible, and I recommend it to everyone.

Vacations In Morocco

Our journey across Morocco began last week! The desert, without a doubt, was the highlight of the vacation, but we were not expecting the driver who would transport us there to be so pleasant. Moha was always willing to assist; from the moment we met him, he made us feel welcome, put us at ease, and made us feel like family. The friendships we formed in such a short amount of time were fantastic. Without a doubt, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
